How to Survive a Cyclone
• Turn off electricity, gas and water.
• Wear appropriate clothing like long sleeved shirts, long pants in thicker materials, gumboots or other protective boots.
• Keep everyone indoors (including pets).
• Stay in a safe place like a cellar or lower level room, internal hallway or bathroom/bathtub.
• Should the structure begin to break down or the roof is taken off, cover yourself with mattresses, rugs or blankets. Hide under a strong bench or hold onto a strong, solid fixture.
• Beware the eye of the storm which is mostly calm weather at the centre of the storm. It is not safe to move until the authorities give the all clear.
• Stay tuned to the local radio station and the BOM website for updates.
• If an evacuation is ordered, follow it. Take your emergency kit with you.
• If you are caught in your vehicle during the cyclone, stay in it. Do not park near the sea, creeks, rivers, power lines or trees. Put the handbrake on and call 000.
After the Cyclone
• Do not go outside until the authorities have advised that it is safe to do so. Do not go sightseeing of damaged areas but do check on your neighbours.
• If you were evacuated, do not go home until it has been deemed safe by the authorities.
• Do not turn your utilities back on until it has been deemed safe.
• Do not use any electrical appliances while they are wet.
• If your property and/or contents suffer damage, contact your insurance company as soon as possible to find out how to submit a claim.
